Mehr als Antiquitäten: Axel Vervoordt ist der Inneneinrichter von Königsfamilien und Industrietycoons. Mit seinem Sohn Boris eröffnet er jetzt eine Galerie in Antwerpen. Eine familiäre Erfolgsgeschichte

Eigentlich sollte ich das jetzt nicht sagen", sagt Boris Vervoordt, "aber für mich ist eine originale Ziegelwand aus dem Mittelalter genauso ein Kunstwerk wie ein Bild von Günther Uecker." Der Galerist stockt, bricht den Gedanken ab und entschuldigt sich. Er wolle doch nicht gleich wieder so anfangen, an diesem Ort, an dem sich der Kreis schließt und an dem dennoch alles ganz anders werden soll. Denn die neue Axel Vervoordt Gallery, die am Donnerstag im Vlaeykensgang in Antwerpen ihre erste Vernissage gefeiert hat, ist als klassischer White Cube konzipiert worden. Oder zumindest als das, was im Vervoordt-Universum diesem Ideal am nächsten kommt. Also nicht 50er-Jahre-Amerika-White-Cube sondern eher 16. Jahrhundert-Belgien-White-Cube.

Opening Axel Vervoordt Gallery in Antwerpen

do 27/01/2011 - 17:03 Nadat Axel Vervoordt het Kasteel van ’s-Gravenwezel en het industriële complex Kanaal in Wijnegem had verbouwd, keert hij vandaag terug naar zijn eerste woonplaats in het historische hart van Antwerpen. In de Vlaeykensgang opent hij een nieuwe, knusse en verscholen tentoonstellingsruimte die zich zal toeleggen op de ZERO en de Gutai kunst, een internationale stroming uit de jaren zestig die streefde naar harmonie tussen mens, natuur en techniek waarbij het licht een dominante rol speelde.

The Vlaeykensgang address where the Axel Vervoordt Gallery will be situated is the exact same location where Axel Vervoordt presented work by Jef Verheyen in a solo exhibition in 1974. It was during the opening of this event that Vervoordt met Gunther Uecker for the first time and an instant sense of mutual appreciation and curiosity emerged.

In addition to representing ZERO and Gutai artists, the gallery will also provide a platform for artists whose work resonates and connects as its substance taps into the flow of the universe.

The inaugural exhibition will show sixteen works from the Black Rain series by Günther Uecker, executed in 1999, as well as later works, in which Uecker treats themes connected to the very core of human existence: nature and religion. Uecker’s ultimate message, which comes to us through centuries of co-existence of Judaism, Christianity and Islam in cities around the world, is the basic „same-ness? of all of us, profoundly human as we are, acting upon our deepest instinct to protect those we care for.

Imbedded in the Antwerp gallery landscape, the Axel Vervoordt Gallery will largely follow the exhibition pattern of the city’s major galleries.

Antwerpen krijgt er drie topgaleries bij

Antwerpen krijgt er drie belangrijke kunstgaleries bij.

Axel Vervoordt opent op 27 januari de Axel Vervoordt Gallery in de Vlaeykensgang, de plek waar hij veertig jaar geleden zijn eerste antiekzaak opstartte. Geert Verbeke van de Verbeke Stichting in Stekene start op 14 januari de Verbeke Gallery in de Leopold De Waelstraat 37, de eerste galerie ter wereld die zich toelegt op bio-art. En in de Pourbusstraat 14 richtte de bekende Nederlandse artiest Frank Gribling 'Locus Solus' in, een kunstruimte gewijd aan informele en Zero-kunst van de jaren vijftig en zestig.
